Ayurveda (the science of self-healing associated with yoga) teaches that strong digestion is key to optimal health. Ayurveda teaches that the phrase “we are what we eat” is incorrect. In fact, it is more accurate to say that “we are what we eat, absorb, and assimilate.”
Ayurveda looks at digestion in a broader sense than I previously considered. Not only do we digest food and absorb the nutrients to become physical stronger, we also digest emotions and experiences. We must properly and fully assimilate emotions and experiences into our being in order to grow emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
Similarly to how important it is to rest after a big meal to let our body absorb the food’s nutrients, at the end of a very full (and possibly turbulent) 2017, we need to pause to integrate the emotions and experiences of the year. What happened this year? What were we supposed to learn? How can we integrate what we have learned this year to become more vibrant beings in 2018?
As we have paused this last week of the year (in beautiful Taos, New Mexico!) to “rest and digest” 2017, here’s what has come up:
Don’t wait. Don’t wait until everything is perfect to start. You don’t need to be an expert, have every certification, or have taken every course to start. Don’t wait until you are “qualified” to share your gifts and to be of service. You already know enough and you are enough. Life is short -- don’t sit around and wait. Just go for it.
Trust that the universe will always make space for you. The universe is abundant. There are always more than enough resources, and there is more than enough space. Trust that you are taken care of and that your life matters for something bigger than just yourself.
The more you give, the more you receive. Stop focusing on what you want to get out of life, and instead switch your focus to what you have to offer. Start your day with asking yourself, “How can I be of service today? How can I make someone else’s day better? How can I make the world a better place today?” The rest will take care of itself.
What are your takeaways from 2017? We would love to hear what the year had in store for you and how you grew mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Happy New Year!
