How to cultivate an abundance mindset

Updated: Nov 28, 2022

"A grateful heart is a magnet for miracles."

As I am sitting down to write this, life is actually perfect. Like out of a postcard perfect (see the photo??). I am in one of the most beautiful places on earth with all of the people that I love most under one roof. I am safe, nourished, healthy, and have so much more than enough. I am blessed to have found "work" that I am passionate about and have so much freedom in my "work" life. I am in love with someone who loves me back and shares the same passions, values, and life mission.

So, life is beyond great, what could go wrong? I had a realization a few months ago that I am really good at focusing on things that I think need improvement or could be going better. Things like "I want to make more money, " "I want to be better at blank," "I want to be there, not here," " I want more of XYZ." I think of myself as a pretty positive person and what I did not realize is that this type of thinking is a manifestation of a scarcity mindset, the tendency to focus on things that I don't have yet. I thought of it more as a positive thing, like I was focusing on how I could grow. However, as I started to study the principles of an abundance mindset, I came to the understanding that this type of scarcity thinking was counterproductive or even harmful.

Switching to an abundance mindset from a scarcity mindset means shifting your focus towards the things that you already have, versus the things that you don't have yet. For example, a scarcity mindset says, "I wish I had more love in my life," while an abundance mindset says, "thank you for all of the love that I have in my life right now." A scarcity mindset says, "I wish I had a better body," while an abundance mindset says, "thank you for my health and the strength of my body in this moment." A scarcity mindset says, "I wish my job payed better," while an abundance mindset says, "thank you for the job opportunities that I have right now to provide for myself and my family." You get the picture.

The incredible thing about the abundance mindset is that it works like the law of attraction. When you focus on what you already have, you call in more abundance into your life because,"a grateful heart is a magnet for miracles." Why would the universe waste it's miracles on someone who is focusing on all the stuff that could be improved when the universe could be making miracles for those people focusing on all of the magic right in front of their eyes? When we appreciate and acknowledge all of the blessings in our lives, we make space for more beauty to come in.

So, how can we cultivate an abundance mindset? Here are the actions that I have been incorporating into my life over the past few months that have changed how I see the world around me.

1) Cultivate awareness. Simply notice when you are thinking and acting from a scarcity mindset.

2) Start a daily gratitude practice. Take 5 minutes every day and think about or write down everything that is already present in your life that you are grateful for. Feel it. Say thank you.

3) Give away what you feel like you don't have. This one can be counter-intuitive. Feeling like you don't have enough money? Give someone in need some money. Feel like you don't have enough love in your life? Call someone and tell them how much you love them. You will realize that you already have everything that you need.

You do enough, you have enough, you already are much much more than enough.

With love,

Hana
